Alex – Urban Street Session

When I first started offering Kids Photography Workshops with Sarah Sims Photography, Alex was one of my first participants.  In fact, she’s so enthusiastic to improve her photography that she’s attended multiple sessions.  She’s certainly got a great eye, so I had fun helping her learn some of the technical aspects.

Fast forward to earlier this year, when I was launching “This Is Me” – I knew I wanted to work with Alex because she has a great sense of herself and her personal style.  Alex is a self-described “girly-girl” with a flair for the dramatic and a keen interest in fashion.  When we talked about what she wanted her images from this session to look like, we realised that we need to divide the session into two parts; some time at home in her room and with her photogenic dog Marley, and some time on the street.  We were lucky enough to have a bright, sunny day in March to work with and so went roaming around Downtown Oakville to make the most of the urban landscape that suited Alex’s style.

As my first “This Is Me” session, my work with Alex really was a proof of concept.  We managed to create a series of images that she was excited to include in her Instagram feed, as well as some that her Mum was thrilled to display as gallery wrap canvas art pieces in the family home.  Alex got to show off her style, and Mum gets her teenage daughter recorded at a pivotal time in her life.
